Commitment 11

Carbon Reduction

This Commitment is about acting urgently to contribute to Aotearoa New Zealand's transition to a net zero carbon economy.

The Tourism Carbon Challenge urges every tourism business to measure its carbon footprint, to take action to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2030, and contribute to a tourism industry that is net zero carbon ahead of New Zealand’s 2050 goal.

To develop your sustainability plan, download the Action Plan (Word template) if you haven't already, go through the actions for each commitment, figure out where you need to start, and make a plan!

Actions to get started:

Start by understanding your business's carbon footprint, and then put measures in place to reduce where you can.

✓ Measure your footprint using a carbon calculator.
 ✓

Set carbon reduction targets and make a plan to achieve these.

 ✓

Develop an energy plan.

 ✓

Implement a sustainable transportation plan.

Actions for doing more:

Once you have the basics sorted, start looking at how you can offset your remaining carbon footprint, and work with others to drive change.

✓ Explore collaboration with others to accelerate carbon reduction actions or technologies.
✓ Become a carbon neutral or carbon positive business by offsetting emissions which can't be reduced further
